Last year Models Direct blogged about the emerging trend of wearing socks and sandals, questioning whether it was the next hot trend or just a fashion faux pa. But, months on, it seems there is still scope for the trend, especially as we get back into the autumn months. Here the modelling agency offers their tips on perfecting the shoes and socks look.
• Colour. The colour palettes for autumn and winter are quite subdued and this is something to continue into the shoes and socks trend. Avoid bright colours and stick to black, charcoal and navy.
• Ankle boots. Wearing socks with heels is still around for autumn and winter but if this is too much too soon, test the trend by trying socks with you ankle or knee high autumn boots first. This look was seen on the catwalk of Erdem where lace-up hiking boots were teamed with neat socks. If you're trying out this look aim to wear socks that come up to an inch above your boots.
• Heels. If you're more daring you could try wearing a pair of killer heels with some sensible socks to fully embrace the trend. If you really want to take on the geek chic look Models Direct suggest pairing this look with one of this season's midi length skirts.
• Thigh high. Last winter the major shoe trend was thigh high boots. This year you can recreate the look (but more cheaply!) by using socks instead. Get really cosy by layering over the knee socks over tights in the season's subdued colours. If you want to add a bit more interest, Models Direct suggest a subtle pattern, a lacy frill or even on-trend bows. See 'The Models Direct Guide to Getting the Autumn 2010 Look' here.
• Brogues. If you're not a fan of heels or want a more everyday look, try wearing socks with brogues for a dandy, Alexa Chung look.
